Lions, snakes and dragons are motives that have been used from pre-historic to more recent times. To explain it in a simplified way one can say that the lion is both a symbol for strength and a ruler. In Christian art it can symbolise both Christ and the King of Darkness depending on the context it is used. The dragon, as well as the snake symbolize evil in Christian art.
